Our Work

El Camino Cantina

  • Client: SGB/Rock Pool Group
  • Sector: Bar & Restaurant
  • Project: Upper Village Queenstown
  • Location: Queenstown
  • Completed: December 2022
  • SHL Team: Project Design | Project Stainless | Project Mechanical | Project Delivery Team

The Upper Village Precinct in Queenstown is home to El Camino Cantina, a large and loud Tex-Mex bar filled with classic and frozen margaritas, delicious Tex-Mex feasts and bangin’ tunes! The food menu is unashamedly Tex-Mex – think sizzling fajitas, soft shell tacos, hand-made tortillas and nachos.

The Southern Hospitality Project Team were brought in to help bring this place to life. The massive bar serving over 100 tequilas, mezcal and many local and imported beers needed to be unique, yet functional. Working with our sister company Project Stainless, Inbuilt drip trays were included in the specially fabricated stainless steel bar tops. Skope Bottle chillers with glass doors were installed to easily display the wide range to customers, and a Scotsman Ice Maker and storage bin were installed ensuring fresh ice is on tap.

With the promise of $3 Taco Tuesdays, Southern Hospitality supplied a dough roller and a specially imported mini Taco press ensuring fresh tacos could me made in-house. The Waldorf 800 series range of products for frying, chargrilling and roasting were the ideal choice for this Mexican menu in the heart of Queenstown! A couple of Convotherm easyTouch electric ovens were also a must-have for this busy kitchen and bar open until the early hours.

Creating a custom-made stainless servery in the boot of a car is not a request you hear every day! We think the result has turned out brilliantly, and the addition of a heat lamp keeps the sides at the right temperature while creating a talking point for customers. Check out the yellow car in the image carousel.

A number of Eurochill and Delta Undercounter Chillers, and a Eurochill Salad Prep Chiller were installed to optimise space as well as a provide quality storage to maintain food freshness,

“Out of the square” thinking was not exclusive to front of office, out in the kitchen a large, wide Starline Warewasher was converted to a dishwasher to take 2 racks at a time. What a great idea!

Make sure you head to El Camino Cantina next time you are in Queenstown, not only is the décor an experience, but we can assure you, there will be a sombrero on your head and hot wings, tacos and margaritas flowing.
