15 scholarships to the value of $2,000 are being made available for second year students training in all areas of the hospitality and bakery industry.

Eligibility

To be considered eligible for a Southern Hospitality Scholarship you:

  • must be enrolled and in good standing at an approved Polytechnic or Technical Institute in New Zealand.
  • will have completed the first year of study and are intending to go on and complete a second year of study.
  • must be a New Zealand citizen or provide proof of permanent residency rights.
  • must show a combination of your work experience, prior education or training and current course of study should indicate how prepared you are for a career in the hospitality industry.
  • should have a strong academic record and good character references.

All areas of the industry will be considered including Culinary Arts, Bakery, Pastry, Patisserie, Restaurant and Hotel Management, Dietetics or Food Science. Only one application per student will be accepted.

Selection

Please only include information that has been requested. Please send copies of certificates, do not send originals. Please read the instructions carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The number of awards is limited to 15 throughout New Zealand each to the equivalent of $2000.00 inclusive of G.S.T. All entries will be scrutinised separately by Graham Hawkes and Howard Osborne, who will select the recipients. Applications will close on 16th October 2017 and all winners will be notified 13th November 2017. You must be currently studying as stated above at the time of selection.

Only fully completed applications will be considered.

You must send in a completed application answering all questions along with an essay of at least 250 words (this is to be typed or written neatly—please include word count). It must tell us why this is your chosen field and the one you wish to pursue and what your future goals are in this field.

You must submit an official transcript of your current year of study or a letter from your tutor detailing your study and a personalised letter of recommendation from your head of department and from your current tutor—see selection process overleaf.

Written recommendations from at least one professional (not a family member) in your field and one from any current work experience you may have completed who are familiar with your skills. You may include any other material you consider relevant but please DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ORIGINALS.

Applications will only be considered by the panel when they contain all of the above information.

Finally - read your application over, ensure you have answered all of the questions, and make sure all information is included.

  • Application closing date—20th October 2017
  • Scholarships recipients announced—13th November 2017

Late entries will not be considered.

Judges

The Judges are Graham Hawkes, New Zealand Chefs Association President and Howard Osborne, Education Consultant.
